Generation X: which are the best workplaces?

Here we take a look at the top five

Fortune’s partners surveyed over 109,000 people aged between 36 and 50 and employed in one of 600+ companies with Great Place to Work certification to produce a list of the top 20 workplaces for Generation X.

1. Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants

One of the Gen X employees applauded the company for how quickly they felt involved in the culture of the business. Another expressed their gratitude to their boss for sending their CV to all the delegates at a conference they were attending so that everyone knew their background before they met. This helped them to feel at home despite only having worked for the company for a matter of weeks.

2. Kimley-Horn

A respondent praised Kimley-Horn for how valued they felt as an employee and how grateful they were for being given the chance to build their own practice based on their area of expertise. They also said the path to ownership, competitive pay and phenomenal benefits were rewarding in this design firm. Another said that the company has a desire to see everyone succeed regardless of their position, helping them to work towards a good retirement.

3. Quicken Loans

The way in which Quicken Loans deeply cares about its employees was praised by one of the survey’s participants, who felt they had received more support than from any other company they had worked for. They also felt the fantastic location, paid time to volunteer and high-quality training were very positive areas of the company.

Another Generation Xer highlighted Bullet Time as something that sets Quicken Loans apart from other organisations. During this time, all the team members involved in technology are given Monday afternoons to participate in technology-based initiatives, regardless of their position in the business. The respondent explained that this gives them the chance to start new initiatives, contribute to projects and learn something new.

4. Texas Health Resources

Praised for the work-life balance it provides, this health care company was deemed ‘extremely ethical’ by one respondent. Another also commended this area and said that the company not only talks about getting the right balance in an individual’s career but also actively encourages the individual to achieve this. The respondent believes that Texas Health Resources is incredibly committed to its employees, allowing them to get involved in health and fitness programmes and to help in the local communities.

5. Ultimate Software

A Generation Xer working for Ultimate Software said that it is the best company for putting the needs of its employees first, contributing to the medicals of all its full-time staff and their families. The respondent went on to say that despite other tech companies having to find ways to save money, Ultimate Software has never wavered on this benefit and has even added to it with discounts on healthy food, exercising, diet professionals, team trips and more.
