Alzheimer’s Research UK was selected as PageGroup’s charity partner in 2013 and the partnership saw employees across the country cover more than 200,000 miles between them as they raised money to fund two PageGroup Research Scholarships. These scholarships have brought two talented new scientists into the dementia research field on three-year PhD programmes, helping give a vital boost to the number of researchers working on the condition.

Oliver Watson, Managing Director at PageGroup, kicked off the partnership by pedalling the first mile on a tandem with Prof Jeremy Turnbull of the University of Liverpool, who is currently training and mentoring one of PageGroup’s two Research Scholars.

The partnership inspired PageGroup employees to pace the streets in 10k races, obstacle challenges and half-marathons, cyclists to pedal hundreds of miles and an Apprentice-style fundraising contest that pitted teams against each other to raise the most money in one day. Hundreds of staff  also came together to take on PageGroup’s annual fundraising challenge, the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Mr Watson said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to have raised over £200,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK and help strengthen the dementia research field by fostering new talent and bringing in young, bright researchers. It’s important for us to fund charity projects where we see a tangible difference.

“With the support of Alzheimer’s Research UK, our company has been involved in a number of incredible fundraising events and initiatives; from marathons and triathlons to pub quizzes and bake sales. We’re a company that truly believes in giving back to local communities and our charity partnerships are a testament to this commitment.”

Ian Wilson, Director of Fundraising at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“It’s been a real pleasure to work with PageGroup over the last two years, and we’ve been hugely impressed by the dedication staff have shown in their fundraising – their efforts have made a vital contribution to dementia research. To defeat dementia we need not just funding but a critical mass of scientists working on the condition. There is a real need to increase the number of researchers working on dementia, and our Research Scholarships are designed to tackle this problem by bringing talented new scientists into the field at the start of their research careers. As recruitment specialists, PageGroup has a strong track record of investing in people, so it’s fitting that their support has helped to nurture two promising researchers.

“Currently 850,000 people are living with dementia in the UK, and with that number on the rise we urgently need ways to fight the condition. Research has the power to defeat dementia, and Alzheimer’s Research UK scientists are making real progress but we rely on public support to be able to fund our research. It’s thanks to the support of people like the staff at PageGroup that we’re able to continue our work.”
