New Birmingham school library throws open its doors following £12,000 investment by local recruitment agency

Somerville Primary School in Small Heath has had a £12,000 library facility custom-designed and fitted out to a high specification

Children at a Birmingham primary school are enjoying a brand new library with space to sit and read with teachers or family members in a customised setting, thanks to a refurbishment investment by local recruitment specialist Now Education.

Somerville Primary School in Small Heath has had a £12,000 library facility custom-designed and fitted out to a high specification to encourage and inspire children to read – as part of school activities or with parents and carers, who can come in before and after school to enjoy the space with children.

Hash Ejaz, Principal Consultant at Now Education said: “We have a relationship with the school through the provision of teaching professionals, and identified an outside classroom building which was underused, for which we suggested the installation of a new library space. I think it’s a great idea, as personally, I wasn’t encouraged to read as a child and felt I’d missed out – reading is an important part of literacy skills in education and for life.

“The idea was proposed internally as part of our commitment to use a percentage of profits to invest in community initiatives. We were in agreement that this would be very beneficial to the children at the school and their families, and would make a real difference to their enjoyment of reading,” he added.

The refurbishment comprises high-end, functional book shelving and seating areas. New books have also been added to ensure the children have access to a wide variety of literature.

Mr Khan, head teacher at Somerville Primary School, said: “This project has been a few months in the making but we’re excited to finally declare it open. To watch it evolve from a dull outside classroom to this bright, innovative and inspirational space has been fantastic. Children and parents are as thrilled as we are with it and we’re sure it will provide reading enjoyment for many years to come. We can’t thank Now Education, and Hash, enough for investing the funds and vision to make this happen.”

Deputy head teacher Shahin Fazil added: “This new library provides an enriched reading environment for the children and has renewed their enthusiasm for reading.”

This investment is the second made by Now Careers during 2015. Earlier this year, it held the Now Education Primary Enterprise Challenge for West Midlands’ schools to participate in, to inspire and celebrate entrepreneurialism in primary school children.
