How recruiters can hire more diverse and effective teams

This is a subject close to the heart of David Weinberg, who helped to found Vervoe

As companies jostle for position in the fast-paced digital era, it is inevitable that recruiters will look for ways to add extra value to the services they provide. Ensuring that they select the very best candidates for a role is the ultimate goal.

Diversity in the workplace is a concept that has been around for quite some time; however, it is possible that organisations are focussing their sights on inherent diversity issues surrounding ethnic background, age, gender and sexual orientation at the expense of acquired diversity.

When we talk about acquired diversity in the workplace, this refers to the disparity in knowledge, skills, values and even personality, all of which are so important when assembling an effective team. For any business to thrive and grow in the modern digital era, it is absolutely essential to build a team that can utilise the individuals’ strengths and ideas in a collaborative way that encourages innovation.

This is a subject close to the heart of David Weinberg, who helped to found Vervoe. This innovative company specialises in using artificial intelligence (AI) to assess candidates, enabling them to demonstrate their talents to prospective employers. By presenting prospective candidates with AI simulations of real-life scenarios, the programme can establish which are best equipped to take on a specific role within a company, removing elements of doubt and promoting a high success rate for both the candidates and the companies that hire them.

As Weinberg points out, a productive team is not solely dependent upon team members understanding how to do their jobs. To produce the best possible results, every member of the team must work collaboratively, communicating effectively with each other to get the job done. The aim is to create a team of people who complement each other’s technical skills, with everyone working seamlessly together towards a common goal.

Weinberg claims to have learned the hard way that filling a technical role within a company requires a candidate with more than just the necessary technical skills. In his view, a candidate’s attitude and interpersonal skills are equally as important as their ability and qualifications. This is why Vervoe aims to provide a more rounded view of each candidate, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses that normal candidate screening processes simply do not touch upon.

As Vervoe launches its new AI skills testing platform, Weinberg reports that this is the first screening system within the recruitment sector that will recommend the most suitable candidate for a position based on their performance.

Although artificial intelligence is not a new concept in recruitment, it has formerly been implemented simply to screen out candidates based on such information as their name or where they live. Weinberg hopes that they will now be screened out purely based on their ability to fit into the workplace, adding real value to the companies that hire them.
