Managing Director of HS Direct, Nick Murphy claims that after advertising for salespeople last month, 12 people who were offered interviews didn’t show up – or even call to say they wouldn’t be coming.
Nick, of Greenhill, said: “We tend to have quite a few applicants for jobs when we advertise, which is good.
“But what’s really surprised me this time is that over half of the people who we offered an interview didn’t even bother showing up.
“What’s worse is that most of them didn’t even call to say they couldn’t make it, which is a complete waste of time for us too.
“We phoned all the people back who didn’t show up, but the majority didn’t answer the phone.
“It makes you wonder if people actually want work, or if they’re just ticking boxes to keep their benefit claims going.”
The company’s other office in Bury St Edmunds had not had this problem. Nick said: “We haven’t had anywhere near as many no-shows in Bury St Edmunds, which does make you wonder whether there’s more of a work ethic there.”
The Sheffield office was hiring 5 new employees to man the telephones in the Sheffield office with a starting wage of £15,000. Hard workers can ‘expect to earn around £30,000.
He said: “It’s a good job and a proper career with a decent company.
“I honestly can’t see why people aren’t showing up. It’s a good opportunity.”
