Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, visited a Jobs Fair in Haggerston to see how employment support is helping jobseekers in the community.
Organised by social enterprise Renaisi at the Haggerston Community Centre, the ‘Employ Me’ day brought together employers and training providers from across the capital to assist participants of Renaisi’s employment services into new jobs or training. They included refugees living in the borough, as well as people aged 50 and over and those who have faced complex barriers to employment wishing to return to the job market.
Ms Hillier chatted to participants about the jobs available and how they supported people into work. Speaking after the event, Ms Hillier said:
“It was great to see such a range of employers and organisations offer support to help Hackney residents get ready for work. Renaisi has long standing roots in Hackney.
“I have been a critic of some of the Government’s employment programmes so it is great to see employment services rooted in the local community which are helping such a diverse range of local people.
“It shows the importance of bringing opportunities to jobseekers where they live.”
Laura Busfield, Renaisi’s Director of Employment Services, said:
“At Renaisi, we always put the people using our employment services at the heart of what we do and celebrating Employability Day in this way gives us a great opportunity for our customers to meet with more employers in their local community.
“We have been working in Hackney for nearly 20 years, and are delighted that so many local jobseekers have participated in the event. It shows the desire Hackney residents have to find secure, rewarding employment”.
UK Employability Day highlights the work of organisations which help jobseekers into work. Coordinated by the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA), hundreds of employment support centres have opened their doors across the UK to celebrate the day.
Renaisi is just one example of the great work going on in thousands of organisations across the UK. UK Employability Day underlines the critical work that employment support providers do in helping to transform people’s lives, communities and businesses.
