Most embarrassing first day stories revealed

We all have a horror story of our first day at a new job going wrong

Thankfully, time heals all wounds and we can think back on our stories and laugh. In fact, that’s just what we asked people to do on Facebook! In the hopes of winning a brand-new
iPad, people from all over the UK told us their most embarrassing stories from their first days at work.

We heard many hilarious stories from our entrants, from falling out of their chairs in the middle of meetings to arriving at work in mismatched shoes. Some of them were so good, we just had to share them with you!

I broke a dog’s leg! – “My first day 28 years ago resulted in my boss’s little Yorkshire terrier going to the vet with a broken leg. I didn’t see him on the floor underneath the desk and I stood on him. Not the best start, but I still work there!”

I pressed the panic alarm! – “On my first day, I was at the reception desk and was observing the receptionist pressing a button to open the doors and let people in. Later, I noticed a colleague who wanted to be let into the building so I pressed a button underneath the desk. Little did I know, the button I pressed was a panic button. Within four minutes, the police and fire services arrived thinking that there had been some kind of serious incident.”

I set fire to a microwave! – “I set the microwave on fire the first day in my new job. I forgot to remove the foil from my dinner as I had been rushing around. Everyone knew me thereafter as ‘the arsonist’ and I never lived it down.”

I vomited on the receptionist! – “I was feeling terrible from a stomach bug but didn’t want to call in sick on my first day. I proceeded to projectile vomit over the reception desk, including the receptionist! I’ve never been so embarrassed or ill in my life. They did let me come back, though.”

I trapped myself in the loo! – “I was trying hard to make a good impression on my first day but needed to excuse myself for the bathroom. Unfortunately, the door jammed as the lock was faulty and I couldn’t get out. About an hour later the boss himself came looking to see where I was, and I had to be rescued by some workmen which took another hour to get the door open.”

I flashed my tights to the office! – “My first day in a new job, I was asked to wait in the manager’s office. I was desperately uncomfortable as my tights were twisted when I put them on and the seam was rubbing in a rather delicate place! I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I very quickly lifted my skirt up and sorted myself out just before the manager came in. After a quick chat, she said she would introduce me to the rest of the office. As I turned around I realised the front of her office was a wall of glass overlooking the whole of the company!”
